In the area of cancer, HAZ is committed to supporting initiatives among particular communities with the aim of increasing the uptake of screening programmes and raising awareness among the public.

Cancer Projects

Cancer Black Care (CBC)

The aim of this project is to run a multi-media awareness-raising campaign targeting the black and minority ethnic communities in Brent, to highlight the dangers of late diagnosis of cancer and to encourage them to improve their testing/screening rates, especially in the areas of breast, prostate and testicular cancer. Implicit within this aim is the dispelling of myths that surround cancer and promote it as an unassailable, incurable illness.

The aims of the project are to provide information through individual consultations, seminars and literature (translated into Dari). Hence bridging the gap between health service providers and the needs of the Afghan community, facilitating access, working in partnership and benefiting from the experiences and knowledge of other groups involved in combating cancer in Brent.

African Women’s Care

The aims of this project are to work with refugee women from across Africa, training volunteers to run an education programme which will enable people to present earlier for screening. The project will target African asylum seekers, refugees and women using outreach and advice to promote screening for breast and cervical cancer.

The project has employed an Advice/Support Worker to provide advice and information on cancer to the 3,000 carers of people with cancer on the organisation’s database as well as new clients accessing the carers centre. Plans are underway to establish a support group for carers.

The aim of this project is to deliver advice, information and screening on cancer, diabetes, TB as well as housing options and offering smoking cessation advice and support to homeless people, asylum seekers and refugees from the Horn of Africa.

The aim of the project is to develop accessible and patient friendly as well as culturally specific health promotion information in Arabic. The aim is to be achieved through translating and disseminating information about cancer in Arabic in different venues such as GP clinics, Health centres, community centres and hospitals, websites, newsletter and hosting and facilitating seminars on cancer prevention and encouraging better access to the services by the Iraqi community living in Brent.

The aims of the project are to work with the older Irish people and the homeless, raising awareness about cancer, its prevention and the common signs and symptoms by feeding in on the expertise of professionals and training relevant sources and agencies. The project aims to target 500 members, by recruiting/ training 6 volunteers to work in the BIAS clubs, carry out home visits which will be promoted through the local Irish press.
